As long as you have a Social Security Number, go ahead and fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov. It asks a variety of questions, including how much your family can contribute to your education (which if filing for independence would be $ 0). It also asks for your personal contributions, which would also be $ 0. Depending on the school to which you apply, there are a variety of grants, both federal and institutionally-based that can help with your education costs. But none of the work on it can really get started without the FAFSA.

You get a job. You save up money in the bank while building interest and credit. You apply for one or two credit cards to build up your credit. You then work for a few months and try to either rent an apartment or buy a car with low monthly payments. Then you can either keep saving up money or you can get an apartment and hopeflly with student loans you can go to school and get an education while still saving money in the bank and building your cedit and you live this way until you get married and then things change.

In your opinion should 18 year olds be financially independent when they are fresh out of high school? As in paying for their own education, apartment/lodging, car, etc in the current economy? While it is legally considered an adult, I personally have a hard time seeing how someone out of high school could suddenly afford to support themselves plus college (given that’s the option taken) with the price on higher education right now-at least without a transitional period…If you think yes to this question, you are more than welcome to shed light on how you think it can be done….and if both a job and scholarships/grants fail to meet what is needed, would you suggest a loan? If so, how much would be too much to borrow? Thanks in advance

Apprently it wasn’t until 1974 that women could have business credit in thier own name, and some women esp older women are not confident that they can handle the financial responsibility?

Is this true?
What can be done about it?

I was reading about Nell Merlino she’s a woman that’s teaching business women how to reach the $ 1million mark because that’s a big hurdle that most woman led businesses are not reaching, she said something to the effect of what I just asked and I want to hear what others think.

Afraid? I don’t think so… more like unwilling. The sad truth is that $ 1 million bucks is chump change these days. Its nothing…

I think one of the other big factors keeping women from more financial success is wanting to start a family and settle down. When you’re in your 20′s and 30′s you have to make a decision… either dive DEEP into a career and starting a business OR look for a mate to settle down with. Men have the luxury of being able to do both and/or waiting longer to settle down.

Move to a place where everything is still cheap, and you are okay to live cheap and stay cheap, you got your financial freedom almost instantly. Look at the formula again. On the other hand, it seems more fun to have a high passive income level that enables you to afford a more luxurious lifestyle. Isn’t that most people are chasing after in their rat race? Besides measuring FF with your passive income, which most people don’t have, you can also measure FF in terms of “time”. Ok I am 15 and I want to pay for all of my expenses (food, utilities, ect.) Because, for me, it is a matter of honor to be able to support myself. I have the resources because after school, I trade in the stock market and I am doing well bringing in about $ 1,200 a month. However, my parents say they want to support me until I am 18. Keep “free loading” for now or until you are old enough to get a real job. Just remember that one day your parents are going to get old and then they will be “free loading” off of you. See how that works, they raise you and in return you are there for them when they need you to be when they get to be older.

you can only be independent if you are 24 yrs old, married, any age with a child, or claim a some kind of dependent. that’s the only way. unless u lie about it. extenuating circumstances.

Assets increase in value. Collectible cars. Securities, especially dividend bearing securities. Patent rights. Businesses.
