ATTENTION TV STATIONS – DO NOT BROADCAST – FOR KOCO TV 5 USE ONLY Sunday afternoon 70 large round hay bales burned near the intersection of Enterprise Road & Tower Road. Prior to the fire starting a hay bale had been moved from the area and when they came back they found the bales on fire along with a grass fire. The fire burned close to an acre of land before Kildare Fire Department and Kaw City Fire Department got it under control. They contacted the NWS office to get a weather update and learned of a wind shift that was expcted in the next 4 to 6 hours so fire fighters decided to burn an area off to keep it from rekindling and causing even more to burn later. The fire had gotten into a wooded area but crews still managed to get it out pretty quick. They were called back out for a rekindle but had it out in no time at all. It’s unknown how it started and arson was not ruled out. The owner said he had insurance on the hay up until 2 weeks ago at which time he dropped the insurance coverage. Each bale was valued at bringing the total loss to just under 00.
