Question by Zo: Do medical miracles happen in horses??? Could my horse be a miracle?
Sorry this is long!! My horse has been diognosed with caudia equinus. It is a very rare illlness and the vet did a scope of his bladder and said he had some sabulous material in there and seeing as the strain of the illness he had made him urinate all the time there was no way to clear this material and so all that we could do is put him down as the illness is terminal.
I cannot discribe how heartbroken we were as like all my horses he was rescued and we love him so so much. Anyway the horrible thing is apart from the peeing the horse is just so happy. He is fat and shiny and bright and so literally we were in the awful position of picking a day to lead this beautiful kind happy boy in and having him put down. We said to the vet there must be something we can do as had the horse seemed in pain or distressed we would of course have done the right thing by him but since he was so happy it just didn’t sit right with us.
Thankfully our vet is a top vet and internal medicine specialist. He said that when humans have this strain of the illness they have a plasma transfusion and steroids and they recover but to date he did not know of anyone that had tried this on a horse.
Anyway We checked that the treatment would not cause the horse any pain or distress as we would never do that to him and found all it involved was him having a sleep for an hour with a drip to get his plasma and then he could go on with his life in the field and have his steroids in his food twice a day. The type of steroid is not one that can effect their quality of life either so we paid out the money knowing we only have a 1% chance that it will save him but at least we can say we did everything for him.
Oh my god!!! The peeing is lessening! Not stopped but certainly lessening! He can lift his tail high to go to the loo and another symptom of the disease is the loss of control of the back end muscles including the tail so the vet has agreed this is an improvement. We have another scope in three weeks and if some of the material is gone then our boy is a first. Dare i think he is the miracle???

Anyone have any ideas or knowledge of palsma transfusions or anything like this?????? I am UK based and so interested in opinions from abroad.
